Saints of the Week

Each week, the Church honors holy men and women whose lives point us to Christ. As we prepare for the week ahead, let’s draw inspiration from these saints on the Catholic calendar, each offering grace and guidance in our lives today.

Week of August 3 – August 9

🗓 Sunday, August 3 – St. Lydia
Mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles, Lydia was a dealer in purple cloth from Philippi and the first recorded convert to Christianity in Europe. Baptized by St. Paul, she welcomed him and his companions into her home, making it a center for the early Church in Macedonia.

🗓 Monday, August 4 – St. John Vianney
Known as the Curé of Ars, this humble French country priest transformed his tiny parish through prayer, penance, and tireless care for souls. Spending up to 16 hours a day in the confessional, he drew pilgrims from across France who sought his counsel and absolution. His total dedication to his flock—teaching, visiting the sick, feeding the poor, and guiding hearts to God—earned him the title patron saint of parish priests, a model of pastoral zeal and sacrificial love.

🗓 Tuesday, August 5 – Dedication of the Basilica of St. Mary Major
The oldest church in the West dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, built in Rome after a miraculous snowfall in August, standing as a lasting sign of Our Lady’s maternal care.

🗓 Wednesday, August 6 – Transfiguration of the Lord
On Mount Tabor, Jesus revealed His divine glory to Peter, James, and John—prefiguring the Resurrection and strengthening them for the Cross.

🗓 Thursday, August 7 – St. Cajetan
Co-founder of the Theatines, he worked for reform among clergy and trust in Divine Providence, ministering personally to the sick and poor.

🗓 Friday, August 8 – St. Dominic
Founder of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), St. Dominic answered heresy with truth, prayer, and a life of poverty. Tradition holds that the Blessed Virgin Mary entrusted him with the Rosary as a powerful means of preaching the Gospel and converting hearts. Through his tireless preaching and promotion of this devotion, Dominic inspired generations to meditate on the mysteries of Christ through Mary’s eyes, making the Rosary one of the Church’s greatest spiritual treasures.

🗓 Saturday, August 9 – St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein)
A brilliant philosopher and convert from Judaism, she became a Carmelite nun and was martyred at Auschwitz in 1942, offering her life in solidarity with her people.
